MABIS Healthcare, Inc., number 40 on Inc. Magazine’s list of America’s 500 fastest growing private companies, had outgrown its 30,000-square-foot facility in Lake Forest, and was planning to build a new 147,000-square-foot office/manufacturing/distribution center in Waukegan. The company is a 12-year-old manufacturer, importer and distributor of medical equipment and supplies.
CHALLENGE:
Krusinski Construction Company began work with construction drawings that were only 70 percent complete. With MABIS’ accelerated growth, there were numerous uncertainties (including the acquisition of another company) that would impact the company’s needs. At the outset, management did not have a clear idea of how large the reception area or offices should be or how they should be laid out. The owner, who travels frequently, gave instructions to start construction and left his staff, an interior designer and Krusinski to work out the details.
SOLUTION:
By working in close coordination with the client and the designer, Krusinski Construction Company designed a critical path master plan, which spelled out exactly when the client and designer would have to make decisions. The plan allowed them to defer as long as possible without incurring costly change orders.
RESULTS:
The building was completed on time and on budget despite a winter construction schedule.
