Sustainable Construction

Going green has gained acceptance as a way to not only save money on energy and operating expenses in buildings, but also as a way to attract tenants and qualify for tax incentives. The most prominent standard for green buildings is the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

LEED Expertise

Krusinski Construction Company is proactive in supporting sustainable building methods and LEED certified buildings. Many of our associates including vice presidents, senior project managers, project managers, project engineers and project superintendents are LEED Accredited as well.

Our firm has completed several unique LEED and CAL Green-Certified projects and has performed many aspects of green building design and construction with other projects.

With the direction of the Architect as the LEED design team leader, we understand our support role in order to achieve a certification from the USGBC.  This includes tasks such as paperwork, subcontractor material procurement and implementation procedures, as well as subcontractor design input. The following is a brief list of the items in which Krusinski has participated in the design, budgeting and construction of LEED and sustainable building components.

Construction Waste Management

Krusinski Construction Company will direct a minimum of 50% of all waste generated onsite to recycling plants. This eases the burden on landfills and allows materials to be recycled and reused.  Krusinski Construction Company typically recycles 75% of all waste generated in order to achieve an additional credit.

Recycled Content 10% and 20%

Krusinski Construction Company hand selects subcontractors that are required to use recycled products and materials during the construction process. These materials include the rebar and concrete in precast panels, structural steel columns and joists, stone backfill, drywall board, flooring materials and many other products that have been manufactured using recycled post-consumer products.

Local/Regional Materials 10% and 20%

Krusinski Construction Company ensures that the raw materials used for end products are harvested and manufactured within a 500-mile radius of the jobsite. This eliminates the need for any unnecessary transportation which in turn reduces the environmental impact of vehicular emissions, minimizes petroleum and diesel usage and reduces the strain on our highway system.

Certified Wood

For wood-related construction Krusinski Construction Company installs Forest Stewardship Council wood products purchased from a Chain-of-Custody vendor. These construction activities include roof perimeter blocking, wall backing and plywood sheathing.  Any subcontractor must also furnish and install wood products to meet their commitment to Krusinski Construction Company.

Construction IAQ Management Plan, During Construction

To provide a healthy environment for both construction workers and the end user Krusinski Construction Company creates and implements an Indoor Air Quality Plan that sets forth guidelines during the construction process. Guidelines consist of daily HVAC equipment and duct protection to prevent debris and particulates from entering the HVAC system, proper storage of materials to prevent absorption of moisture and avoiding the use of any permanent equipment during construction.

Volatile Organic Compounds

Krusinski Construction Company ensures that all products applied inside the weatherproof enclosure meet the VOC limits set forth by USGBC. Products include adhesives, sealants, paint, carpets and composite wood. This provides both the construction workers and final occupants with an environment free from potentially harmful VOCs.
